In case you were wondering how thick these bound-up copies of bond prospectuses are, here's one bond book on its side, compared to the width of a standard-size business card. The bond issue in this case was for 3 million in bonds issued by the City of Houston.

Going through my desk tonight I found this old photo of my great grandfather. It's a small little photo about the size of a business card. I think I rescued this from an album my grandmother had.

From some other photos taken on the same day, my guess is that this was taken in the late 40's. So the car he's sitting in was already old. And I'm not sure that it is his. I think he's just hamming it up for the camera.

WIlliam L. Harper was on the School Board and later was a State Representative in Georgia. He did not stay in politics very long though. My mother always told me it was because he was too honest. He owned a general store for a long time and a gas station as well.

I loved visiting his house as a kid. He and my great grandmother had a big white house on a hill in Eillijay. It had a huge kitchen, big porches, and a long stairway. There was a big garden in the back, a garage filled with old tools, and a root cellar with my grandmother's canned goods.

After he and my great grandmother passed, the house became a bed and breakfast. Sadly it burned to the ground a few winters ago. Only the chimneys were left.

I don't know for sure who took this. Perhaps my grandfather, his son-in-law. And I have no idea about the camera. The back of the photo simply says it was printed on Kodak Velo Paper.

Anyway, posting this was a spur of the moment thing, and a nice break from my own work, plus I really like this snapshot.

I remember as a kid, a dollar really went far. Really the bottom dollar in shrunk using liquid ammonia. Not the kind you keep under the sink at home, but the industrial 100% strength type.
Liquid ammonia is used in refrigeration of large commercial food processing and cold storage buildings. Liquid ammonia has a flashpoint of -27 degrees, meaning that in its liquid form, it is atleast that cold (cold enough to freeze you solid or severely burn you if contacted with you skin) Don't ask me how, I just know that I dipped a dollar bill into it using tongs and then put it on top of the compressor which is warm and it shrinks up. This one was dipped and warmed about 5 times to get to that size.
Oh, and you think that your ammonia at home stinks and burns your eyes, I can't even begin to tell you what its like with an ammonia leak in a building.

Well, at least if you want to be paid. In the meantime, for those in design professions, we can all commiserate about the plain old stupidity of some clients. Thankfully, there’s a website that allows us to do just that. The following pearls of wisdom appear courtesy of Clients From Hell:

“The artwork is approved, but we need to replace the skeleton, we think it might be homosexual, and that could ostracize the audience, it’s a very masculine industry.“

“Make it more good.“

I had a client that requested we meet in his kitchen. Halfway through our meeting, he excused himself to go to the bathroom but left the door open so we could continue to talk. I charged extra for that meeting.

“My wife really hates blue. So does my secretary.“

“When I get a business card this size (not 3.5 x 2 inches), I think that that person is a fag.“

“Can you make the circles a little bit rounder?“

“It seems to be taking a long time. Would it be quicker if I came down and sat with you guys through it all?“

“You’re gonna charge 0 for that? Aren’t you from India? What’re you going to do with 0?!“

“Can you bill your design time in 6 minute increments“

“I’m pretty broke right now.“

I pack the standard clear plastic kit with travel-sized toothpaste, hair brush, nail clippers and deo, but this is my emergency travel safety kit that goes into my carry-on and usually stays hidden in my backpack or briefcase.

Not pictured- Black elastic hair ties, 325mg acetaminophen tablets, copy of my passport and health insurance cards..

I asked a photographer friend about making me some business cards, and he said "Why not just try making 'em on Flickr?" I thought he was kidding, but HOLY COW, these are really cool.

The company is Moo.com, and you choose a set of your Flickr photos that you want to turn into little cards. It's pretty cheap (), and they are shipped speedily. I wish they had more font choices for the back of the card, but I couldn't be happier with the size of the card and the print quality -- although bear in mind that I'm no silver-gelatinf-stopbokeh photo guru.

Seriously, next time you see me... ask for one of these!! I am so excited to be able to share my photos!

This is an assortment of Object and Bystander Tokens that were put out by WK, or, in the case of the Seth pogs, created by Seth to hand out as a "Business Card"

To get them to print at the correct size, use your graphics software to print them out at 25% of their original size. If you resize it, the text becomes harder to read

None of them are tournament legal (With the exception of the Mjolner if you have the original 3D object and are just reprinting a lost card).

I will try to summarize my learnings from my latest photo shoot.

I have added notes to the photo, do hover over them to read details. This is a very basic setup and mostly practical notes. My camera and lens setup are Nikon D90, NIKKOR AF-S 16-85mm 3.5-5.6ED and NIKKOR AF-S 50mm 1.4G.

At the last two photo shoots, I have been taking couple portraits as the guests arrive. This works very well as you make sure to get a clean shot of every guest/couple. Now you know who is together that's always nice. As a bonus, I made small name signs, getting them to hold the signs while taking a single shot and afterwards without the signs the real photo. Now you know the names of all the guests (for the photo book).

Remember to be nice and engage in a conversation with the waiters if possible. You never know who will be your next customer. Exchange business cards and remember to follow up a few days after the party. Again this might lead to new customers.

Get the table plan or guest list before the big day. Make the name signs and pack your bag and remember all your important lenses..

I always deliver a photo book and a DVD with the photos after a photo shoot. As I go through the photos for the book, I mark each guest with one color to ensure that I have remembered everyone. Red for entrance guest shots and green for table shots. You want to ensure that everyone is part of the book. I have my own photo book with different page setups and sizes to get inspiration from.

Don't forget the food shots and to get a copy of the menu to include in the photo book.

Additional include your name on the last page as well as date, title and optional copyright notice.

LOL... that always makes me laugh. I mean, you hear it in movies... it's a dumb cliche', but I had a boss who was really quite serious. We had a discussion about it one day. We were in a store that sold art prints and he said something to the effect that he knew that this was a print because the eyes didn't follow you. I couldn't help wondering why he thought that that was somehow lost in the reproduction process.

Today was spent catching up on some lost sleep from the last few days. I awoke at 11:30 this morning refreshed.

This afternoon I helped a local agence with their charity event that they call "Creatathon". It's a 24 hour period where they work for clients that could not afford them normally and create such things as logos, letterhead, business cards and all kinds of other things. I helped with a video for a community center that helps with day care, after school activities and getting single moms to earn their GED.

Afterwards we headed back to the agency for a nice meal before I headed home. They will be working straight through the night until noon tomorrow. This place really treats their employees like family. They had all the creature comforts to help them make it through the night, including a massuese. I was on the list to get one be decided that I needed to head home.

Tomorrow it's off for some more training for work... this time it's local... thank God.

Felix Update: Again, thanks so much for your kind words guys. Felix is doing much better and the specialist will see him tomorrow to decide exactly what needs to be done. Hopefully he won't need surgery though... cross your fingers!

Strobist info: For the painting it was an Alien Bee's Bee800 above the camera and featherd towards the subject. I changed the lighting slightly for the figure staring at the painting... I just moved the light down and to the right.
