MSU-Mankato Graduation 2009

The business college graduates are seated on the right and the social/behavioral sciences grads are on the left. My brother's former roommate was graduating with a degree in international relations. Since he is from Japan and didn't have any family or friends present, my family decided to attend in their place. The Bresnan Arena inside the Taylor Center is where the Minnesota Timberwolves used to hold their training camp.

MSU is a state college located an hour and a half outside the Twin Cities metro area with an enrollment of almost 15,000. It is the third largest university in the state behind the University of Minnesota and St. Cloud State. Athletic teams compete in Div II except for hockey which is Div I. The hockey teams have been quite good the past few years actually. The campus is also home to the training camps for both the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Timberwolves. Notable alumni include ABC sports commentator Brad Nessler, 2007 Miss America contestant Jennifer Hudspeth, and Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor.

Most large public spaces serve a purpose of creating a common bond, people coming together in one place for the same purpose. Airports, at the immediate level are no different than other public spaces. Yet, as we gather in the great modern terminals our identities are reclassified. No matter who we thought we were upon entering, once we stand in the TSA security line we are now identified as a traveler. The only thing we may take along from our outside identities is the hyphen. At this point we lose leave our old groups and prejudices outside the terminal and adopt new ones. We identify ourselves and each other as a Business- Traveler, Leisure- Traveler or maybe Adventure- Traveler and so on. The cold reality is, despite these new labels, we all share a high degree of anonymity.

As days on the road blend into years on the road, the faces of other travelers almost become invisible. I can make out the shapes, the telltale carry- on pulled at soft angle behind the person as they walk and I know they are a fellow traveler. I know we probably share many similar stories and tales of the road. I likely have more in common with them than many of my friends back home. But all I see is a faceless shape. When we sit next to one another in the terminal or on the plane, we put on our headphones which act as a high- tech cloaking device designed to isolate us from contact with the human form sitting next to us. And we sit and wait each of us the same; Anonymous- Traveler.

"
The last time a similar pullback occurred was during the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the U.S. economy was in recession, he said.

Some experts read the sluggishness in gasoline demand, which has fallen every week since late January, the same way. They say it has more to do with the national economy than high gasoline prices.

"We're certainly starting to see the American consumer pinched," said Bruce Bullock, director of the Maguire Energy Institute at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Weller said the burden of higher prices falls hardest on the working poor, who are seeing as much as 9 percent of their income go to fuel costs. In response, many consumers are being forced to cut back elsewhere as well as adding credit card debt, he said.

Packing the growing jars

On the tour of Hamakua Mushroom Farm, the only commercial grower of gourmet mushrooms in Hawai‘i:

Machines fill quart-size plastic bottles with the growing medium, then move them into a large tunnel that is sealed and heated to sterilize the mixture, killing any bacteria present. Those tubes to the left in the photo, drill a hole in the compressed, wet substrate for the seeding to come, to provide easier growth of the spawn. Afterwards, a bottle-capping machine caps the bottles automatically Conveyors move the sterilized bottles to a seeding room, where the mixture is injected with the fungi that will eventually grow into mushrooms. The bottles are capped and left to incubate at 75 degrees; the length of incubation can be anywhere from 21 days to 3 months.

El Vado Auto Court Motel
courtesy of Cindy Carson

In anticipation of the realignment of Route 66 through Albuquerque, Daniel Murphy left his post as manager of the Franciscan Hotel in downtown Albuquerque to open the El Vado in 1937. Mr. Murphy, an Irishman who learned the hotel business in New York City before coming to New Mexico, constructed the El Vado Auto Court Motel along Central Avenue in Albuquerque near the Rio Grande and Old Town. He chose the motel’s name Vado, which means 'ford' in Spanish, for its location near the old ford that crossed the Rio Grande where Bridge Street is today.

El Vado Auto Court Motel

The motel consists of 32 units, some of which are interspersed with covered carports, arranged in two parallel, one-story buildings facing a parking courtyard. When the motel opened, gas pumps were located along Central Avenue in front of the motel office on the northeast corner of the site. A flashy neon sign topped by an American Indian wearing a colorful headdress welcomes travelers on Route 66. Mr. Murphy constructed the motel in the Spanish Pueblo Revival style. Purposely-designed irregularities give the motel the look of the nearby Pueblos. These include curvilinear and straight parapets, irregular massing, varying buttresses, and exposed vigas (wooden roof beams). The interior of the motel office and lobby is ornately decorated in the Pueblo style. When the motel opened in 1937, the local business journal Albuquerque Progress described the units as “swanky tile cabin suites ready for the summer tourist trade.”

The El Vado retains a high degree of historic integrity, because it has been largely unaltered since its original construction. Route 66 historian David Kammer describes the motel as “one of the best examples of a largely unaltered pre-World War II tourist courts remaining along Route 66 in New Mexico.” Alterations include the removal of the gas pumps in front of the motel office, the addition of a swimming pool, the replacement of original windows with metal double-hung windows, and the painting of Southwest Indian designs on the façade. The El Vado’s relatively unaltered appearance coupled with its spatial arrangement, remaining carports, and use of Spanish Pueblo Revival style convey a strong sense of the property’s era. The El Vado is historically significant for its association with automobile tourism along Route 66; its role as an auto court in defining Albuquerque’s growth, appearance, and image; and its picturesque architectural style designed to attract tourism and immerse travelers in the exoticism and mystique of the Southwest. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

New Orleans - CBD: World Trade Center New Orleans
business degree
The World Trade Center New Orleans, located at 2 Canal Street, is a 33-story, 407 feet (124 m)-tall skyscraper. Designed in a Greek Cross-shaped plan with external sun-shade louvers by Edward Durrell Stone, it was the tallest building in New Orleans at the time of its construction in 1967. Originally known as the World Trade Mart Building, it originally housed the headquarters of various mercantile companes and consulates.

WTC New Orleans is a non-profit organization of 1,900 corporate and individual members which was started in 1943 as International House and in 1945 as International Trade Mart, its two predecessor organizations, which merged in 1985. Dating back to its origins more than 50 years ago, WTC New Orleans was the first of what are today 289 World Trade Center organizations in 85 countries which are members of the World Trade Centers Association. The Association itself was founded in New Orleans in 1968.

The top floor hosted a cocktail lounge, Top of the Mart, from the 1970s through 2001, whose bar slowly rotated once per hour. After this a bar called "360" (as in degrees) opened in its place. The floor below held the Plimsol Club.
