Captains of industry from world leading UK companies are backing a new Government campaign to highlight the best of modern British manufacturing at an exhibition during the Olympic Games.

Business Secretary Vince Cable and Business Minister Mark Prisk have today formally launched the Make it in Great Britain campaign, which aims to transform outdated views of UK manufacturing and dispel the myth that Britain ‘doesn’t make anything anymore’.

Senior traders such as Joe Greenwell from Ford of Britain, William Butler-Adams from Brompton Bicycles and Michael Ryan from Bombardier Aerospace are behind the campaign. They will act as the first ‘industry champions’ taking formal roles as part of the campaign and supporting its work.

The exhibition will take place at the Science Museum and will run from 24 July to 9 September 2012. The campaign builds on the already successful See Inside Manufacturing initiative and will celebrate the successes of the manufacturing sector and encourage young people to consider a career in the industry. There will also be a specific element, the Make it in Great Britain Challenge, focusing on new innovations yet to be brought to the market.

Palmetto Partners announces “Rebound Rumble” as high-school students from six states and Charleston area schools gather to showcase their hard work in the 2012 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Palmetto Regional.

From Thursday, March 22, 2012 to Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the North Charleston Coliseum, over 1,000 students making up 42 teams, as well as engineering and technical mentors will demonstrate their skill for science, mathematics, and technology. They will compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and high-impact partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities. The highly competitive, action-packed contest is described as a rock concert and sporting event rolled into one.

The Opening Ceremonies on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 9:00am will include South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Dr. Mick Zais, North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey, and The Citadel President, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. Afterwards, games will begin. A full schedule of events.

Over a six-week timeframe, students work with professional engineering Mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a Kit of Parts and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.

The 2012 “Rebound Rumble” robotics game is played between two Alliances of three teams each. Each Alliance competes by trying to score as many of the basketballs in the hoops as possible during the two minute and 15-second match. Balls scored in higher hoops score teams more points. Team Alliances are awarded bonus points if they are balanced on bridges at the end of the match. Game animation of Rebound Rumble.

Apart from the game itself, teams are judged on design, team spirit, professionalism, and perseverance.

Now in its 21st season, the FIRST Robotics Competition encompasses more than 58,000 high school students participating on approximately 2,343 teams in the United States and worldwide. The regional events will lead to the FRC Championship, an international competition, at the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, Missouri 25-28 April, 2012.

FIRST was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, developer of the first portable insulin pump and the first portable kidney dialysis machine, to “create a world where science and technology are celebrated where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.”

“The varsity sport for the mind,” the FIRST Robotics Competition combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.

Around 350 students from NTU have become student members of the Institute of Directors at a special event held at NTU’s Newton building.

The joint initiative between NTU and IoD provides them with links to high level business expertise and opportunities to further their careers.

Open the photo for notes over signs.

On the right is the clock of Albert Hansen. He moved south to the southeast corner of First and Cherry in 1906. We saw his clock in the postcard I posted last week - perhaps. That clock was actually owned by Burnett Brothers. It may have been the same physical object though.

This postcard is very similar to this Warner photo circa 1903.

On the left is the time ball of G. Benninghausen. Be sure to click through and read about the time ball. My notes tell me he moved to this location no sooner than 1900. And that L. W. Suter actually took over his business in 1905. So I'm putting a circa 1903 date here, and we'll see if anyone can do better than that.

This postcard was sent by one Bertha Allen, 3620 Linden Ave, Fremont. I'm hoping this is the Bertha Allen who was a stenographer in the postmaster's office in the Federal Building. She had some harrowing adventures. Looking forward to looking this up in the city directories.

Curious about Enoteca Sileno and the Enoteca Vino Bar for ages, we were finally in this part of town and decided to drop by. Judging by the breakfast we had, we'd be back for a few more meals!

First up was the rustic-looking bread and butter pudding made with Italian Panetone. It was served warm, which allowed the luscious lashings of chocolate custard to become molten puddles of flavour. It was also studded with candied fruit, just like those used in a panforte. The best of all was that the panetone was nice and moist and not claggy. It was also served with a pot of whipped ricotta and cream, slightly sweetened so it was good to on it's own!

We had also ordered the ricotta fritters, which turned out to be gloriously fluffy golden pancakes drizzled with honey and scattered with fresh fruit. Amazing. Even better than the ricotta hotcakes at Replete Providore, although maybe not as visually stunning.

After breakfast we had a stroll through the foodstore which was packedd full of Italian treats, worth a visit on it's own!

The Opening Ceremonies on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 9:00am will include South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Dr. Mick Zais, North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey, and The Citadel President, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. Afterwards, games will begin. A full schedule of events.

Over a six-week timeframe, students work with professional engineering Mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a Kit of Parts and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.

The 2012 “Rebound Rumble” robotics game is played between two Alliances of three teams each. Each Alliance competes by trying to score as many of the basketballs in the hoops as possible during the two minute and 15-second match. Balls scored in higher hoops score teams more points. Apart from the game itself, teams are judged on design, team spirit, professionalism, and perseverance.

Now in its 21st season, the FIRST Robotics Competition encompasses more than 58,000 high school students participating on approximately 2,343 teams in the United States and worldwide. The regional events will lead to the FRC Championship, an international competition, at the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, Missouri 25-28 April, 2012.

FIRST was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, developer of the first portable insulin pump and the first portable kidney dialysis machine, to “create a world where science and technology are celebrated where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.”

“The varsity sport for the mind,” the FIRST Robotics Competition combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. The layout of the central business district in Huntsville, TN is unusual for a small southern town. There is a row of older buildings across a sidewalk from the back of the Scott County Courthouse. It looks like something I'd see in Colonial Williamsburg where the "street" goes back to the horse-and-buggy days but you can't widen the street any for cars, so it remains a sidewalk. That's not the case here as I just figure it's not old/historic enough for that. You just can't drive right up to the bank and park. (It's not really that far of a walk either.) I just don't remember seeing anything else like it in these parts.

The stone First National Bank of Huntsville (seen here) is the most historically significant of the buildings and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
