From Thursday, March 22, 2012 to Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the North Charleston Coliseum, over 1,000 students making up 42 teams, as well as engineering and technical mentors will demonstrate their skill for science, mathematics, and technology. They will compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and high-impact partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities. The highly competitive, action-packed contest is described as a rock concert and sporting event rolled into one.

The Opening Ceremonies on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 9:00am will include South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Dr. Mick Zais, North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey, and The Citadel President, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. Afterwards, games will begin. A full schedule of events.

Over a six-week timeframe, students work with professional engineering Mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a Kit of Parts and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.

The 2012 “Rebound Rumble” robotics game is played between two Alliances of three teams each. Each Alliance competes by trying to score as many of the basketballs in the hoops as possible during the two minute and 15-second match. Balls scored in higher hoops score teams more points. Team Alliances are awarded bonus points if they are balanced on bridges at the end of the match. Game animation of Rebound Rumble.

Apart from the game itself, teams are judged on design, team spirit, professionalism, and perseverance.

Now in its 21st season, the FIRST Robotics Competition encompasses more than 58,000 high school students participating on approximately 2,343 teams in the United States and worldwide. The regional events will lead to the FRC Championship, an international competition, at the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, Missouri 25-28 April, 2012.

FIRST was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, developer of the first portable insulin pump and the first portable kidney dialysis machine, to “create a world where science and technology are celebrated where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.”

“The varsity sport for the mind,” the FIRST Robotics Competition combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.

Private gets his chance to mentor in Africa

Just 15 months ago, Daniel Bateson was hanging drywall with his family’s home improvement business, the Connecticut-native never dreamed he would visit Africa.

Even during the weeks and months taking temperatures and handing out band-aids at Vicenza’s health clinic, the U.S. Army Africa private first class wondered if he’d get a shot to take part in the command’s new initiatives – partnering with African militaries to promote stability on the continent.

Then, a few weeks back, Bateson, 21, got tapped to mentor in Djibouti – making him the most junior U.S. Army Africa Soldier to deploy to the continent. He accompanied Sgt. 1st Class Roddy Rieger to Camp Lemonier in early-August, where the team led a weeklong course on how first aid and medical evacuations work in hostile zones – similar to the U.S. Army’s combat lifesaver training.

“I know this material by heart. As medics, we know this as the simple stuff and it’s not hard to teach it to others,” Bateson said. “The Djiboutians were eager to learn and absorb this.”

The team mentored 29 students from Djibouti’s military, ranging from junior enlisted troops to company-grade officers. The five-day course included classroom instruction, hands-on exercises and a daylong test of the skills in a simulated hostile environment.

Rieger, 35, of Bismarck, ND, a senior U.S. Army Africa NCO who served in Iraq and Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, knew that understanding both cultural and language issues would be the key to success. Rieger also relied on lessons learned from previous assignments in Tunisia and Morocco when building his lesson plans.

“It’s all about how you communicate with individuals, no matter if they speak broken English, no English or even use hand signals,” Rieger said. “It’s great when you see them nodding ‘yes’ and giving you the thumbs up.”

U.S. Navy and Air Force personnel from Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa augmented the Army team. The mentoring is part of U.S. Army Africa’s ongoing effort to support African partners with teams of Soldiers with niche capabilities such as logistics, legal affairs and medicine.

“This is my job, I’m an NCO and medicine is my passion,” Rieger said. “If we helped just one Djiboutian, and he later uses that knowledge to save a life – that’s what it’s all about.”

Now, Bateson is back in garrison – reflecting on an experience he sums up with one word – “cool.”

“We were building a relationship between their country and ours – that’s a big thing,” Bateson said. “So much of this was about breaking down barriers and opening communication. I think we left them with a good impression.”

Curious about Enoteca Sileno and the Enoteca Vino Bar for ages, we were finally in this part of town and decided to drop by. Judging by the breakfast we had, we'd be back for a few more meals!

First up was the rustic-looking bread and butter pudding made with Italian Panetone. It was served warm, which allowed the luscious lashings of chocolate custard to become molten puddles of flavour. It was also studded with candied fruit, just like those used in a panforte. The best of all was that the panetone was nice and moist and not claggy. It was also served with a pot of whipped ricotta and cream, slightly sweetened so it was good to on it's own!

We had also ordered the ricotta fritters, which turned out to be gloriously fluffy golden pancakes drizzled with honey and scattered with fresh fruit. Amazing. Even better than the ricotta hotcakes at Replete Providore, although maybe not as visually stunning.

After breakfast we had a stroll through the foodstore which was packedd full of Italian treats, worth a visit on it's own!

Private gets his chance to mentor in Africa

Just 15 months ago, Daniel Bateson was hanging drywall with his family’s home improvement business, the Connecticut-native never dreamed he would visit Africa.

Even during the weeks and months taking temperatures and handing out band-aids at Vicenza’s health clinic, the U.S. Army Africa private first class wondered if he’d get a shot to take part in the command’s new initiatives – partnering with African militaries to promote stability on the continent.

Then, a few weeks back, Bateson, 21, got tapped to mentor in Djibouti – making him the most junior U.S. Army Africa Soldier to deploy to the continent. He accompanied Sgt. 1st Class Roddy Rieger to Camp Lemonier in early-August, where the team led a weeklong course on how first aid and medical evacuations work in hostile zones – similar to the U.S. Army’s combat lifesaver training.

“I know this material by heart. As medics, we know this as the simple stuff and it’s not hard to teach it to others,” Bateson said. “The Djiboutians were eager to learn and absorb this.”

The team mentored 29 students from Djibouti’s military, ranging from junior enlisted troops to company-grade officers. The five-day course included classroom instruction, hands-on exercises and a daylong test of the skills in a simulated hostile environment.

Rieger, 35, of Bismarck, ND, a senior U.S. Army Africa NCO who served in Iraq and Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, knew that understanding both cultural and language issues would be the key to success. Rieger also relied on lessons learned from previous assignments in Tunisia and Morocco when building his lesson plans.

“It’s all about how you communicate with individuals, no matter if they speak broken English, no English or even use hand signals,” Rieger said. “It’s great when you see them nodding ‘yes’ and giving you the thumbs up.”

U.S. Navy and Air Force personnel from Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa augmented the Army team. The mentoring is part of U.S. Army Africa’s ongoing effort to support African partners with teams of Soldiers with niche capabilities such as logistics, legal affairs and medicine.

“This is my job, I’m an NCO and medicine is my passion,” Rieger said. “If we helped just one Djiboutian, and he later uses that knowledge to save a life – that’s what it’s all about.”

Now, Bateson is back in garrison – reflecting on an experience he sums up with one word – “cool.”

“We were building a relationship between their country and ours – that’s a big thing,” Bateson said. “So much of this was about breaking down barriers and opening communication. I think we left them with a good impression.”

Liverpool, first called The Cloth Case, was founded in 1847 by Jean Baptiste Ebrard, a Frenchman who first started selling clothes in cases in Mexico City's downtown. In 1872, he started importing merchandise from Europe. Much of the merchandise was shipped via Liverpool, England, prompting Ebrard to adopt the name Liverpool for his store, in 1862 he opened its second store and since then it has not stopped growing.

From Thursday, March 22, 2012 to Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the North Charleston Coliseum, over 1,000 students making up 42 teams, as well as engineering and technical mentors will demonstrate their skill for science, mathematics, and technology. They will compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and high-impact partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities. The highly competitive, action-packed contest is described as a rock concert and sporting event rolled into one.

The Opening Ceremonies on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 9:00am will include South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Dr. Mick Zais, North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey, and The Citadel President, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. Afterwards, games will begin. A full schedule of events.

Over a six-week timeframe, students work with professional engineering Mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a Kit of Parts and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.

The 2012 “Rebound Rumble” robotics game is played between two Alliances of three teams each. Each Alliance competes by trying to score as many of the basketballs in the hoops as possible during the two minute and 15-second match. Balls scored in higher hoops score teams more points. Apart from the game itself, teams are judged on design, team spirit, professionalism, and perseverance.

Now in its 21st season, the FIRST Robotics Competition encompasses more than 58,000 high school students participating on approximately 2,343 teams in the United States and worldwide. FIRST was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, developer of the first portable insulin pump and the first portable kidney dialysis machine, to “create a world where science and technology are celebrated where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.”

“The varsity sport for the mind,” the FIRST Robotics Competition combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. The First National Bank, at 1542-1546 Miner Street, was constructed in 1880 on land owned by Henry Plummer, who served as the president of the bank. As the first bank in Idaho Springs, it was considered to have the most modern equipment and was furnished in a very elegant, Victorian style. The bank offered safety deposit boxes to its customers and had the only burglar-proof vault in Northern Colorado outside of Denver. Bank officers included notable community business leaders such as Dennis Faivre, George McClelland, J.J. Elliott, Thomas Cooper, William Doe and L. Hanchett.

In 1885, the west half of the building was constructed for Thero and Co., a company specializing in fresh and smoked meats and fish. First National Bank was not able to survive the Depression and the building was sold over the years and leased to a jewelry store, lawyers and accountants. In 1989, the building was purchased by Leo Bradley with the intent to restore it to its original purpose as a community bank. After a renovation, Clear Creek National Bank opened its doors in 1996. The vault is now lit at night and can be seen through the floor to ceiling windows, topped with double sets of Greek Revivial stone pediments, from the street. The original safety deposit boxes were located in a salvage yard and reinstalled in the vault.

The Idaho Springs Downtown Commercial District, roughly bound by Center Alley, 14th Avenue, Riverside Drive, and Idaho Street, has been the commercial center of the community since its development in the late 19th century. The Idaho Springs downtown area, with its collection of Late Victorian-Era structures, formed the core of a city where prospector George A. Jackson made the first placer gold discovery in Colorado. It went on to serve as an important milling and supply center for the mining region which accelerated the settlement of Colorado.

“This is my job, I’m an NCO and medicine is my passion,” Rieger said. “If we helped just one Djiboutian, and he later uses that knowledge to save a life – that’s what it’s all about.”

Now, Bateson is back in garrison – reflecting on an experience he sums up with one word – “cool.”

“We were building a relationship between their country and ours – that’s a big thing,” Bateson said. “So much of this was about breaking down barriers and opening communication. I think we left them with a good impression.”

Private gets his chance to mentor in Africa

Just 15 months ago, when Daniel Bateson was hanging drywall with his family’s home improvement business, the Connecticut-native never dreamed he would visit Africa.

Even during the weeks and months taking temperatures and handing out band-aids at Vicenza’s health clinic, the U.S. Army Africa private first class wondered if he’d get a shot to take part in the command’s new initiatives – partnering with African militaries to promote stability on the continent.

Then, a few weeks back, Bateson, 21, got tapped to mentor in Djibouti – making him the most junior U.S. Army Africa Soldier to deploy to the continent. He accompanied Sgt. 1st Class Roddy Rieger to Camp Lemonier in early-August, where the team led a weeklong course on how first aid and medical evacuations work in hostile zones – similar to the U.S. Army’s combat lifesaver training.

“I know this material by heart. As medics, we know this as the simple stuff and it’s not hard to teach it to others,” Bateson said. “The Djiboutians were eager to learn and absorb this.”

The team mentored 29 students from Djibouti’s military, ranging from junior enlisted troops to company-grade officers. The five-day course included classroom instruction, hands-on exercises and a daylong test of the skills in a simulated hostile environment.

Rieger, 35, of Bismarck, ND, a senior U.S. Army Africa NCO who served in Iraq and Afghanistan with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, knew that understanding both cultural and language issues would be the key to success. Rieger also relied on lessons learned from previous assignments in Tunisia and Morocco when building his lesson plans.

“It’s all about how you communicate with individuals, no matter if they speak broken English, no English or even use hand signals,” Rieger said. “It’s great when you see them nodding ‘yes’ and giving you the thumbs up.”

The layout of the central business district in Huntsville, TN is unusual for a small southern town. There is a row of older buildings across a sidewalk from the back of the Scott County Courthouse. It looks like something I'd see in Colonial Williamsburg where the "street" goes back to the horse-and-buggy days but you can't widen the street any for cars, so it remains a sidewalk. That's not the case here as I just figure it's not old/historic enough for that. You just can't drive right up to the bank and park. (It's not really that far of a walk either.) I just don't remember seeing anything else like it in these parts.

The stone First National Bank of Huntsville (seen here) is the most historically significant of the buildings and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
