Obituary of John Grant 1905
grants for business
The obituary of John Grant published in The Clermont Sun, Wednesday, February 22nd, 1905.

John Grant passes away at Brownwood, Texas. A veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars Gone.

The announcement of the death of John Grant, which occurred at the residence of his son, Joseph H. Grant, in Brownwood, Texas, on the 11th [Feb 1905], was received with sorrow by the people of Batavia, to all of whom he was intimately known. Mr. Grant, by reason of advancing age, had been gradually declining in health and strength for several years, but did not consent to give up his business, that of harness making, in which he had been engaged in Batavia for more than fifty years, until last summer [1904]. While he was conscious of declining vigor, he showed no sign of despondency but maintained that cheerfulness of temper which was a marked feature of his character through life. Last fall he was induced by his son to go to Texas for the winter in the hope, which now proves to have been delusive, that the balmy air and genial skies of that region might at least postpone the end which his friends saw to be inevitable. He took his leave from his old friends here with a premonition that it might prove to be a final farewell.

John Grant was born in Batavia, May 22, 1825, and consequently lacked at his death but a few weeks of having completed his eightieth year. His whole life, which a few brief intervals, was passed in this village. When a young man he enlisted in the Second Ohio Infantry and served in that organization through the Mexican war, participating in Scott's campaign that resulted in the defeat of the army under Santa Ana and the surrender of the capital. He recruited the first Clermont county company for service in the Civil War, and served during that conflict as a member of Captain Deem's company, 153rd O.V.I. [Ohio Volunteer Infantry]. His military record was an honorable one, but it was as a neighbor and a citizen that his memory will be most cherished. No kindlier spirit ever breathed. It is doubtful whether he ever had a real enemy and those who knew him need not be told that it was not in his nature to bear malice against any man. In his later years he took great delight in bee culture and had made a profound study of the nature and habits of this little friend of man. It was a delight to hear him discourse to an appreciative listener on this subject. In his intercourse with men there was a quaint, old-fashioned courtesy which lent a charm to the spoken word; a consideration of manner that had its impulse in a warm heart. His respect for the rights of others was complete, his charity for their shortcomings broad and his sympathies only bounded by the circle of human misfortune. Funeral services were held at the residence of his son in Brownwood and burial under the charge of the I.O.O.F. made in that city.

To help the growing operation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA), Rural Development (RD) selected Pastures A Plenty farm to receive two separate Value-Added Producer Grants, one in 2009 for business planning and another in 2012 for working capital and marketing efforts to introduce different retailers and restaurants to its high-quality pork products. The grants are helping Pastures A Plenty grow from 70 to 90 sows, build a new barn, upgrade equipment and improve existing facilities.

The Queen's Awards for Enterprise and Enterprise Promotion

Ms Carmel Gahan receives The Award for Enterprise Promotion from Vince Cable, Business Secretary.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise and
The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion
The Awards consist of a business Award (The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise) with three separate categories: International Trade, Innovation, and Sustainable Development; and an Award for individuals: The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion. The objective of the scheme is to encourage and reward outstanding achievement by UK based companies and individuals.

A total of 209 business Awards have been announced this year from a total of 862 entrants:

International Trade (423 entrants, 151 winners)
Innovation: (311 entrants, 50 winners)
Sustainable Development (128 entrants, 8 winners)

Eleven individuals have received The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion for their inspiring efforts to encourage UK entrepreneurship.

There was an increase in the number of applications received this year over last year, and the business success rate was the highest we have ever seen at just over 24%, reflecting the increased quality of entries in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

The winning companies cover a vast range of business sectors including design, building and construction, transport, electronics and technology, manufacturing and engineering, finance, medical and pharmaceuticals, food and drink, oil and gas, metals, plastics and packaging, safety equipment, printing, recycling and more.

Winners of The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise enjoy widespread respect from their peers, a company visit by a Royal representative to present a crystal bowl and a grant of appointment, and a special reception at Buckingham Palace in November. They may use The Queen’s Award Emblem for five years as a symbol of their quality and success.

Winners each year are announced on the Queen’s birthday, 21 April.

In a survey of business winners in 2011:

76% reported the win had brought added commercial value to their business
73% reported a boost to staff engagement
61% felt that applying for a Queen's Award was a useful process to benchmark the progress of their business
55% reported the win had delivered new business opportunities
49% of winners achieved increased recognition overseas

trying to picture Oakland in a better light
grants for business
I work in downtown Oakland, California. These days I am sure that many people around the world are hearing about the unrest regarding the shooting by a Bart Police Officer of an unarmed young black man (Oscar Grant) involved is a fight in the Fruitvale Bart station early on New Year’s Day.

In spite of having all of the earmarks of an extremely tragic accident due to poor judgment, many people have decided that this event is all about race, all about various unrelated injustices, all about police brutality, all about their lives as victims. In taking this approach, these same citizens have been victimizing those around them with violence, destruction of property, public intimidation, and demands for instant justice. One is reminded how lynch mobs come to be formed. In spite of the victim's family pleading that the violence stop, it is clear that some people intend to continue this type of activity.

Employers in downtown Oakland have been routinely releasing workers to leave the area early whenever a rally or protest is anticipated. Nightly news is featuring tips for business owners on how to prepare for and avoid vandalism. All of this reinforcing a world view of Oakland that many had hoped to change in recent years, a single night’s event undoing years of work improving how this city is perceived.

And how does this help provide justice for anyone?

The Swan Boats parked for the night...
grants for business
he Swan Boat story dates back to the 1870's when Robert Paget, whose descendants continue to operate the business, was granted a boat for hire license by the City of Boston.
Rowing a small boat in the Public Garden lagoon was a favorite summer pastime for city residents during the day and evening.
In 1877, Robert and others introduced a new kind of boat to the waters of the lagoon. With the popularity of the bicycle expanding, he developed a catamaran which housed a paddle wheel arrangement that was foot-propelled. To cover the captain, Robert suggested a swan.
The idea came to him from his familiarity with the opera Lohengrin. The opera is based on a medieval German story in which Lohengrin, a knight of the Grail crosses a river in a boat drawn by a swan to defend the innocence of his heroine, Princess Elsa.

Print out protest signs and bring to
CONEY ISLAND COALITION NEW YEARS DAY RALLY!
Coney Island Deliberately Destroyed by Thor Equities!
City Still Peddles Plan to Reward Thor!

WHEN: Thursday, January 1, 2009, 12 Noon……WHERE: on the Boardwalk near West Tenth Street, at the memorial shrine on Boardwalk Gates of Coney Island’s closed & dismantled Astroland Park…Bring photos, drawings, letters, poems, flowers to add to the shrine.

Residents and tourists who come to Coney Island on New Year’s Day will be shocked to find historic bars and storefronts closed and colorful signage obliterated by Thor Equities “Space for Lease” banners. A few days before Christmas, Thor CEO Joe Sitt’s agents began evicting longtime tenants by cutting off locks, asking for triple the rent, or refusing to discuss 2009 leases. On Christmas Eve, huge custom-sized "Space For Lease" banners were put up on Ruby's Bar & Grill, Nathan’s Boardwalk store, Cha Cha’s, and others businesses on Thor owned property in Coney Island. On September 7, Astroland closed forever after 46 years as Coney Island’s largest amusement park when Thor refused to grant a lease for the 2009 season.

"Especially in this economy, the city should not allow Thor Equities to displace an entire community of successful, thriving businesses who are contributing tourism dollars and tax revenue to the city,” says Dianna Carlin, owner of the Lola Staar Souvenir shop who found out on Christmas Eve that Thor Equities was evicting her from her shop on the Boardwalk. "This is the type of economic climate where Coney Island, the People’s Playground, would thrive because it provides accessible recreation for all during tough economic times and instead they are allowing it to be senselessly destroyed."

Why are Mayor Bloomberg, City Councilman Domenic Recchia and Lynn Kelly, President of the Coney Island Development Corporation, allowing Joe Sitt to get away with murdering Coney Island? This is your opportunity to say Thor No More!... Mayor Mike, Give Us Back our Playground!...Hey Domenic, Don’t let Pal Joey Kill Coney!....CIDC, Go Back to the Drawing Board!

“It is tragic that the City's flawed redevelopment plan allowed predatory developer Thor Equities to take over and darken Coney Island,” says historian Charles Denson, a Coney Island native who began documenting his world-famous neighborhood when he was 12 and Steeplechase Park was set to be demolished. “The only way Coney Island will be saved for future generations is if the Bloomberg administration modifies its unrealistic rezoning plan and preserves the existing amusement zoning in its entirety. It is hard to believe that a shopping mall developer from Bensonhurst has brought the Bloomberg administration to its knees.”

The City's rezoning plan is a capitulation to Thor Equities and almost completely abolishes the amusement district for the sake of high rise condos disguised as hotels and generic retail. Coney Island is currently zoned for 61 acres of amusements; the city's new proposal reduces the amount of amusements to 9 acres. This reduction of the Amusement District will destroy Coney Island's legacy as "the People's Playground" and defeat the goal of creating a world class amusement and tourist destination.

“Change is inevitable in Coney Island but it MUST be change we can believe in,” says Dick Zigun, the founder and director of Coney Island USA. Known as the unofficial “Mayor of Coney Island” and the spokesman for the amusement district, Zigun was on the board of directors of the Coney Island Development Corporation until he resigned in protest in June 2008. “The CIDC compromised its plan for the amusement park last May to the extent that I had to resign to live with myself,” says Zigun. “Now its becoming clear that they city doesn’t have any interim plan and as a result, five hundred working people have lost their jobs in the amusement industry. The Municipal Arts Society of Manhattan has come forth with a plan for a world class tourist attraction in Coney Island for the 21st century. It is faster, better and cheaper. The CIDC must go back to the drawing board!”

Save Coney Island Coalition says
YES to Revitalizing Coney's World Famous Amusement District!
NO to 26 New High Rises of up to 30 stories each in the current Amusement District!
NO to Retail, Malls or "Entertainment Retail" in the Amusement District!
NO to shrinkage of the Amusement District from 61 acres to 9 acres!
YES to preserving Amusement Zoning in the Amusement District!!
YES to keeping Coney Island the People's Playground- providing accessible Amusements for ALL to enjoy!!
