Shi Tao has now served half of his 10-year prison sentence and the company largely responsible for putting him in jail, may hold the key to getting him out.

In less than two weeks, Yahoo is holding its annual shareholder meeting in San Jose, CA. Amnesty representatives will be in attendance and plan on putting a major kink in its traditional business agenda. For the fourth consecutive year1, we're laying Yahoo's shameful policies on human rights on the table and urging all Yahoo shareholders in attendance to join us in demanding that the company live up to its founding principles of open access and community empowerment2.
It is critical that Yahoo hears this message echoed by its shareholder base because this group has a strong influence over decision making and Yahoo's financial future. It's unfortunate that we've got to aim at the company's bottom line in order to focus their attention on the larger problem. But even after other large Internet companies, including Google and GoDaddy.com, took very public steps forward recently in condemning China's censorship and other restrictive practices3, Yahoo's silence remains harshly deafening.
