Thank you for your views and comments; they are very much appreciated.

[This is one of 7 images] The renovated Embrey-Maupin building (in Remington, Fauquier County, Virginia) dates from 1903, boasting a Mesker Brothers iron store-front (cast and galvanized) and a pediment stating the date. Built for Sanford Embrey and John Maupin, the structure was a store and then pharmacy; in the 1920s the 3rd floor housed Frank Hoff’s poolroom, apparently also a site for square dancing. In 1910 the tax value was 00.

It is a white and red 3-story brick structure with iron-front, each level separated from the others by a prominent band of galvanized iron. There are 4 windows on street level and 5 each on the 2nd and 3rd stories; these latter windows have iron columns on either side and columns at the corners. Symmetry in established in the facade by the paired nature of these small Corinthian columns, all resting on an individual base with 2 vertical rosette ornaments. The ground level has symmetry as well—across the front a display window, a recessed entry, two more display panes, another recessed entry and one final large window. The entry doors are double-leafed, made of wood and glass, characterized by single panes in each leaf and in the large transoms. To either side of the doors are thin cast iron pilasters with wider ones in the center and at each corner. The roof is of the shed-type with a truncated galvanized iron pediment capping the structure, proclaiming the store’s name. In the galvanized cornice are brackets and below them is a course of circular red ornaments. Between the pediment and the circular decorations is a galvanized band showing a pattern of ornamental swags and fleur-de-lis. Mesker Brothers was a firm that specialized in commercial iron facades. For more insight into the types of fronts they were able to provide, see their 1899 catalog archive.org/details/Geo.L.MeskerCo.ArchitecturalIronWorks... and their 1904 (or later) issue archive.org/details/MeskerBro.MetalStore-frontCatalog The Embrey-Maupin building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Remington Historic District in 2005 with the identification #05000395
