Fire wrecks American dream
FIFTY firefighters tackled a blaze that caused tens of thousands of pounds
worth of damage as it wrecked a storage unit at a Broadheath business park.
The fire damaged nine classic American cars in the building, as well as
other goods including musical instruments.
Six fire engines tackled the blaze after the premises at L and M Business
Park - the former Linotype complex - was torched on Sunday afternoon.
At first they could not get through the roller shutter doors at the
entrance to the unit, and used a forklift truck to break in.
Then they faced dangers caused by the blaze ripping through the roof, and
had to withdraw until the roof collapsed.
Five jets were directed at the building, using water from the Bridgewater
Canal that runs alongside it.
Fiirefighters wearing breathing apparatus prevented the blaze spreading to
surrounding industrial units. These premises include a garage, Dunham Car
Sales, where 10 cars were smoke damaged. The firm's Nigel Read said: "The fire
brigade reacted really quickly to save the rest of the building."
Station commander Tony Hunter said: "The crews did a really good job in
preventing the fire spreading."
But iron roof girders that support the unit were so severely damaged that
it faces being demolished.
The nine classic cars in this area were being renovated by American Dream
Cars, run by Alan O'Brien and his son Michael. They included two rare Buick
vehicles - only 5,500 of these were made made.
Once renovated the nine cars would have been worth around 150,000.
But Alan pledged that they would bounce back from the bodyblow and find new
premises. "It is devastating but the phoenix will rise from the ashes. We
will continue.
"We don't know the extent of the damage until we do an assessment."
He is relieved their four best vehicles were not in the unit.
