This is a vertical panorama stitched using seven 7D RAW captures (at 98mm) of the entrance to 中環廣場 Central Plaza in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Escalators at the entrance of the building are typical in Chinese architecture, as the ever flowing energy is similar to that of water, an important element in 風水 Feng Shui.

I never liked the design of the building. Most of the people in Hong Kong also question the naming of the building when it was built—although its name suggest that it is in 中環 Central, it is in fact located at Wan Chai—which is two MTR stops away.

# About 中環廣場 Central Plaza

This 78-storey, 374 m (1,227 ft) skyscraper was completed in August 1995 and is located at 18 Harbour Road, in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong.

It is the third tallest tower in the city after 2 IFC in Central and the ICC in West Kowloon. It was the tallest building in Asia from 1992 to 1996, until the Shun Hing Square in neighbouring Shenzhen was built. Central Plaza surpassed the Bank of China Tower as the tallest building in Hong Kong until the completion of 2IFC.

Advertisements for 19th century businesses in Andover, Hampshire

These signs for family businesses in Andover probably date from the late 19th century: H W Burden was founded in the 1880s and moved to No.1 High Street just after 1900. Shaws operated from 1808 to 1988, Laytons from 1853 to 1952, Bucklands from before 1871 and Cockings before 1859. In 1885, John Bienvenu took over the chemists founded by R Gould in 1813. They are now all defunct although Shaws and Burdens survived until the 1980s. The board is currently displayed at Finkley Down Farm Park.

I had actually been to Hong Kong once before - way back in 1990. Then, a British colony (until 1997), it felt very British with a slight Chinese influence. After my walk today I felt the total opposite - Hong Kong is now very Chinese with a slight British influence.
The only thing that hadn't changed were the guys on the streets trying to sell you tailor made suits and fake brand watches.

No. 20, the Bund, originally Sasson House, including the Cathay Hotel. It's been the Peace Hotel since 1956.

Built 1929 by the famous Sassoon family who dominated Shanghai business and real estate in the early 20th Century. He was a British Sephardic Jew of Iraqi origin, and his family had extensive business in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Calcutta. Sassoon House later housed the Cathay Hotel and since 1956, the Peace Hotel. It was, and still is today, internationally famous for its jazz band in its cafe.

No. 23, the Bund. Built 1936 as the head office of the Bank of China. An interesting Art Deco building with Chinese elements. It resembles the Bank of China Hong Kong branch's head office in Hong Kong. (Photo to come).

Just business as usual on the streets of Dalian.

This photo is blurry because I took it quickly while walking by on the other side of the street. I didn't want to look like a tourist. This was my last day in China in the summer of 2004, the second summer I spent teaching in Dalian. I remember that I was walking around the neighborhood, looking forward to going home but feeling a sense of pre-nostalgia, thinking about how much I'd miss China.
