29 Ex-Staff Protest Outside Clearys

Guineys & Co was closed in September after its sister store Clerys was placed in receivership. Although a private equity firm bought Clerys a few hours later, Guineys & Co was not included in the deal and was placed into liquidation.

I had a chat with these protesters today but as I had assumed that they were with Clerys rather than Guineys I did not ask if they still had their jobs. When I got home I checked online and it would appear that there were 29 protesters (10 people who worked in Guineys and a further 19 people who worked at Clerys outlets in Naas, Blanchardstown and Leopardstown) and all of them had lost their jobs and will receive only statutory statutory redundancy payments even though most of them were with the company more than 30 years.

One of the protesters told me that at one stage their employer paid their pension contributions but that this had been changed years ago and that they (the employees) were required to contribute towards their pensions. Reports in the media indicated that the new owners have stated that they’re not accepting liability for pensions for the 29 employees and therefore it was concluded they they would lose their pensions. However the employees do not yet know the status of their pensions so it is possible that they may receive a reduced pension.

My business cards finally came in. What's the first thing I did? I wrote "I put the pal back in Principal Engineer" on a few and handed them out. Next thing I did? I built this structure. Eat your heart out, Frank Lloyd Wright (please God, let one of my friends know who this is).

Update: IBM just bought FileNet, so these new cards are already outdated :(

Business / Bankrupt

I snapped this shot of my friend Job quickly -- and unnoticed. (I had been clicking and moving around for a few minutes, shooting the wineglass macro shots -- they are posted a few spaces below this in my photostream -- and so he didn't notice when I turned the camera on him.)

Oh -- one other little quirk: He and I were sitting on the porch this morning, reading last weekend's New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Both papers were a full week old (though I bought them when they were "fresh"), and I've been too swamped to do more than (briefly) scan the opening pages.

*sigh*

Buy Better Together Challenge

Jo Swinson, Consumer Affairs Minister (left) with 1st Prize Winners, Smarterbuys - Jacqui Grimes and Louise Coulter.
The ‘Smarterbuys’ scheme, which helps provide affordable loans to disadvantaged people so that they can buy essential goods, scooped the £15,000 prize as the winner of the Buy Better Together Challenge, announced today by Consumer Affairs Minister Jo Swinson.
Smarterbuys will use the award to develop their work further and to spread awareness of their affordable loans and products to help more consumers.

The Buy Better Together Challenge was launched by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and Co-operatives UK in December 2011 to encourage groups of consumers to get together and negotiate discounted rates for buying goods and services in bulk. The Challenge received 110 entries, which were whittled down by a panel of independent judges to seven finalists.

Collective purchasing schemes can benefit individuals and communities in various ways, for example, saving money for those on low incomes; increasing access to healthy or organic food, or reaching out to less mobile members of the community.

‘Fair Food Carlisle’ was awarded the runner-up prize for their scheme which uses buying groups to provide workplaces with a weekly supply of food from local businesses. ‘Fair Food Carlisle’ won £5,000 which will be invested in improving business processes and hiring staff.

Jo Swinson said:

“The Buy Better Together Challenge has highlighted hundreds of fantastic ideas and examples from local communities, who banded together to make their money work harder. Collective purchasing is of immense value to groups, not just to make cost savings, but to increase social links in the community and reach out to vulnerable consumers who may not have access to online research or internet shopping.

“The schemes we have heard about today aren’t just benefitting consumers though; businesses have seen first-hand how they can gain more customers by working with these groups and communities, often beating competitors in the process. Many congratulations are due to the organisers of ‘Smarterbuys’, which is a positive example of how collective purchasing can challenge existing markets and provide better results.

“And I also congratulate ‘Fair Food Carlisle’ in supporting local produce growers and taking an innovative approach to boosting their local food economy. These schemes are a clear example of what can be done when consumers are empowered and work together to get better deals.”

Back in business!

I just fixed my RAZR V3xx. I broke the keypad ribbon cable taking it apart -- and my spare housing (bought cheaply off Ebay) has a bad keypad. (Looks like it has the "starbucks virus" ... aka, someone spilled coffee on the table and it went into the phone.) So I picked up a new keypad sensor assembly for off ebay and I'm back in business.

The phone actually works better than before as the "down" direction on the d-pad never felt very good. Now it has a nice click like all the other keys.
