By joining, and later forming, a Self Help Group, Kanthamani has learned important business skills and has become a local expert on managing small, affordable loans. Now the treasurer of the AWASH committee for the village (a group to ensure safe water, sanitation and hygiene measures), Kanthamani has moved away from a life beset by money problems and illegal dealings and now plays an important part in the future health and happiness of the whole village.

Ester Bako

Ester Bako (29) completed the Adult Literacy programme at the Twezimbe Centre, Mbiko, Jinja, Uganda. The cenre is run by Sister Maureen of the Franciscan Missionary. Ester's course took one year to complete and concluded with exams. Once she finished the course she was given a small loan to start up her own business. In 2009 she opened her hair dressing business and it is going from strength to strength.

Her formal education ended in primary 3 when her father died and her family couldn’t then afford for her to attend school. She left to look after hens at home.

She is very happy now to be running her own business and she hopes to expand in the near future.
