NAPA, Calif. — Native species plants begin to sprout up along the banks of the widened Napa Creek here, March 7, 2012. The plantings will provide shade and additional habitat for fish and other river wildlife once they reach maturity. The Corps is also installing box culverts – tunnels large enough for a car to drive through – to channel flood water from the creek directly to the Napa River and away from homes and businesses. The plantings and culverts are part of the .8 million Napa Creek project, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009; a joint effort of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, the city of Napa, and the Napa Flood Control and Water Conservation District to reduce the flood risk for the city.
